The arrival of Apple's iPhone 5 has been one of the most eagerly anticipated roll-outs of the year. Interest is so high that it has spurred the creation of a whole new cottage industry – iPhone trade-ins. Take the example of Peter Myran, a Chicago yoga instructor and part-time programmer. Myran knew he wanted to get the new iPhone 5, but money was a little tight. So he packed up his iPhone 4 and sold it to online reseller Gazelle for $300. The funds are earmarked for the immediate purchase of the next generation iPhone, the fifth generation of smartphones from Apple.
"I'm really into Apple" Myran said. "I am constantly using many of the features on my iPhone. Friends with competitive smartphones all have various complaints, but I find my iPhone perfect for me." Myran is certainly not alone in his trade-in strategy. There are thousands of Apple nerds just like Myran who are looking to upgrade from older smartphones to the iPhone 5.
A tsunami of trade-in activity is being generated for the new device, due to hype about its new lighter, slimmer configuration, improved camera and faster microprocessor. Recently, the kindle based kindle repair electronics seller Amazon experienced a 20 percent boost in trade-ins of all kinds of smartphones as the launch of iPhone 5 became imminent. As trade-ins doubled in the last two weeks before iPhone 5 introduction, Anthony Scarsella of Gazelle noted that used iPhones are most popular trade-in. It is estimated that in the week leading up to the iPhone 5 release, about 4,500 individuals have tried to sell their used iPhones, an increase of 30 percent from the previous week. With the circulation of press invitations from Apple to the iPhone 5 launch event in Cupertino, California, Gazelle found itself accepting iPhone trade-ins at the rate of six per minute.
"It's been a lot more aggressive this time than when the iPhone 4 launched," Scarsella said. "There's been more hype around the phone since it got delayed." Upon launch, Gazelle is seeing as many as 20,000 people who will use the site to sell their used phones. This is ten times the number seen after the launch of the iPhone 4. Currently, Gazelle's average trade-in payment to consumers is $170 for a good-condition iPhone 4 with 32 GB of memory.
Other players in the trade-in market include ReCellular, RadioShack, NextWorth, eBay and GameStop.
